How to stay chafe free while working out

It can be really challenging to find workout clothes that work well for you. I am forever in search of the perfect sports bra and shorts, and just when I think I’ve found them, they get discontinued, or the season changes.

Sometimes though, however perfect our clothing, repeated use, washing, or using in endurance workouts can result in chafing and rubbing that make you wince with stinging pain when in the shower. Here’s how you can avoid that:

1. If you have areas of skin which rub together and create friction, such as your inner thighs, create a barrier. The easiest way to do this is to find clothes that fit well, such as compression/bike shorts or short sleeve shirts instead of tank tops. I love these shorts from Sweaty Betty as they come in several different prints and lengths and have great pockets.

2. Choose workout clothes in synthetic fibres such as Lycra, which are moisture wicking, and if you can, find items that are seam free. The fewer seams, the less opportunity for rubbing!

3. Ensure that your clothes fit properly. Sports bras can dig in if they are too tight, and baggy T-shirts can rub you raw. Choose underwear, socks and base layers that fit snugly and don’t have any bunching.

4. If there are pieces of your clothing that you know rub after a while, such as the hooks on the back of a sports bra, add a little body glide before your workout. In an emergency, lip balm also works!

5. Make sure you stay hydrated. If you are dehydrated, your body is unable to flush salts away from your skin easily. Drink lots of water before, during and after exercise, allowing you to perspire freely so the perspiration doesn’t dry into salt crystals that can enhance the chafing.

6. If you’re heading out for a long bike ride or run, pack a couple of bandaids so that you can deal with that unforeseen hot spot before it gets worse.
