What’s a SMART goal?

I love goal setting, especially when there’s something I’m passionate about achieving. One of my most recent longer term goals was to complete my @nasm_fitness CPT certification, which I really enjoyed studying for. I also have daily goals related to health and fitness, as well as other areas of my life such as finance, nutrition and travel. Regardless of where you’re at in your fitness journey, goal setting can help you improve and feel accomplished.

One of the best ways to set goals is to ensure that they are SMART. So what does this mean? The SMART acronym stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Here’s what each component entails:

1. Specific: A goal should be clear, well-defined, and specific in terms of what you want to achieve. It answers the questions of who, what, where, when, and why.

2. Measurable: A goal should be quantifiable, allowing you to track progress and determine when it has been achieved. Including specific metrics or indicators helps you measure your success and stay accountable.

3. Achievable: A goal should be realistic and attainable within your abilities and available resources. It should stretch you outside of your comfort zone but remain within the realm of possibility.

4. Relevant: A goal should be relevant and aligned with your overall objectives, values, and long-term aspirations.

5. Time-bound: A goal should have a specific timeframe or deadline by which it will be achieved.

By following the SMART goal framework, you’ll create goals that increase the likelihood of success and enable you to track and adjust your progress effectively.
