What is a dietary supplement?

I’ve recently been learning about dietary supplements in my NASM course. I thought I was pretty knowledge about them but it turns out that I have a lot to learn!

If you (like me) also aren’t quite sure what a dietary supplement is, then let me fill you in. It’s a product which is not considered a food, is intended to supplement one’s diet, and contains one or more dietary ingredients such as:

– Vitamins

– Minerals

– Herbs or other botanical

– Amino acids

Popular supplements include vitamins D and B12; minerals like calcium and iron; herbs such as echinacea and garlic; and products like glucosamine, probiotics, and fish oils.

Unlike medicines, products sold as dietary supplements do not require prior approval from the FDA but they are regulated by several different agencies/organisations. They come with a Supplement Facts label that lists the active ingredients, the amount per serving (dose), as well as other ingredients, such as fillers, binders, and flavourings. The manufacturer suggests the serving size, but if you’re unsure about what’s right for you then reach out to your health care provider for guidance.

Do you take any dietary supplements? I’m curious to know what’s on your list and why.
